Sprachkurs/Sommerschule: Summer School of “Embryology – from Gametes to Organisms"

Einrichtung: Masaryk-Universität

Zeitraum und Ort: 14.7. – 27.7.2024, Brno / Brünn

Stipendienprogramm: Stipendien des Freistaats Bayern für Sprachkurse und Fachkurse in Tschechien

I decided to take part in the summer school on “Embryology - from Gametes to Organisms” in order to prepare for my master's thesis in the field of reproductive biology. My home university doesn't offer any courses in embryology, so I was excited about this opportunity.

When I arrived, I was surprised to see that over 100 students and staff members were taking part. There were only 5 girls in my class. Classes and labs were from 9am to 1pm with lots of breaks and time for coffee. Our teachers were very nice and enthusiastic and we learnt a lot together. In the practical part of the first week, we were able to look at sperm, oocytes and embryos atdifferent stages of development. In the second week we focused on the organogenesis of embryos. Each week, everyone gave a short 10-minute presentation on a paper and at the end of the second week, we had a short final test.. There were only 5 girls in my class. In the afternoons there wereoptional activities such as survival czech, a day trip to Vienna, a boat trip and a folk dance workshop which allowed us to get to know each other in a fun way.

The whole organisation was very well done and the organisers were lovely and fun to be around.

Where the hell is Brno

As I had never heard of Brno before, I was really looking forward to explore this city with the new friends I had made here. We all lived in the same accommodation so it was easy to socialise. The accommodation itself was simple, we lived in double bedrooms with a bathroom and a balcony and a shared kitchen on most floors. Breakfast was included and alright.

The cost of 1200 € included the accommodation, breakfast, the course and most of the activities, which were all covered by the BTHA scholarship. All in all, I enjoyed the two weeks in Brno and got a lot out of the course. I met some lovely people from all over the world who I hope to keep in touch with. I am very happy to have received the scholarship and would recommend the experience to anyone!
